Are you thinking about a career in roofing?

The UK roofing sector has a lot to offer anyone thinking about a career in construction.

The Construction Skills Network reported that there are up to 46,000 roofers working in the industry, for the 2018-2022 period . Over the next 5 years it is estimated that the roofing industry will require an extra 3000 trained personnel to keep up with the demands. These figures prove that there is a need for more skilled and qualified roofers.

Huge range of specialist jobs in roofing

There are many successful roofing businesses across the UK, from sole traders, to large, national contractors. With a huge range of different specialities within the industry. A good example of this would be heritage roofing which involves learning historic craftsmanship and conservation skills.  Another growing area is sustainable and renewable roofing, such as solar roofing or green or blue roofs. Also, a strong demand for traditional slate roofing, commercial roofing, flat roofing and much more.

How do I become a roofer?

You can enter the roofing industry through several routes. College courses, for example, Diplomas in Roofing Occupations or Diplomas in Construction Skills. These courses will teach you some of the skills needed to start in this job. You can also get into roofing through an apprenticeship as a roofer. Finally, you could start as a roofing labourer and do further training while you work to get a roofing qualification. You can also do further specialist training courses, for example, heritage and conservation skills in roof slating and tiling.
