Rogue Roofers -How to Avoid them

A quick search online reveals the shocking extent of the problem of rogue roofers across the Northwest. Sadly, this is echoed across the country. Here is a selection of the headlines we found:

Lancaster Guardian -Monday, 11 November 2019

“Cowardly rogue traders targeting Lancashire’s elderly and vulnerable. Cruel conmen have targeted vulnerable homeowners across Lancashire in a wave of scams across the county.”

The Northern Echo-2 May 2019

“ROGUE traders who pretended to be qualified roofers have been jailed after conning vulnerable and elderly people out of more than £85,000.”

Lancashire Post- 27 April 2018

“An 88-year-old widow who is recovering from breast cancer has spoken of her ordeal after a rogue trader conned her out of £12,000 for roof work.”

Liverpool Echo-29 August 2017

“Rogue builder ripped off OAPS and blew cash on holidays. Victim weeps in court as he tells how he lost savings”

Lancashire County Council Trading Standards Warning

Despite the majority of roofing companies being honest and trustworthy, there are many cowboy tradesmen in operation. They will often overcharge for unnecessary works to your property. Their work can be  substandard and, in many cases, detrimental to your property. In Summer 2019, Lancashire County Council Trading Standards issued a warning to local homeowners after a series of incidents regarding roofing work. In a warning statement they issued they stated:

“There have been reports of bogus roofers operating across the county trying to charge too much for simple work or offering to carry out repairs that are not needed. Paul Noone, head of Lancashire County Council Trading Standards Service, said: “We’ve had several alerts relating to door-to-door sellers. These include traders using pushy sales tactics or recommending work that just isn’t needed.”

Roof work does, however, come at a cost. When you consider the crucial role your roof plays in protecting your home or business this means that any repairs made to your roof need to be done correctly and by a fully qualified and insured company. By using the services of a rogue roofer, you could end up paying twice.

How can you Identify and Avoid a Rogue Trader

Many rogue traders will cold call your property indicating that there are problems with your roof and pitch for the work on your doorstep. We advise against doing any sort of business with anyone who knocks on your door and offers to carry out work on the spot, be it roofers or any other alleged tradesmen. There are several reasons for this advice-

  • If you verbally agree to a price on the doorstep, you then have no proof of the agreement if the price suddenly increases when the work has been carried out.

  • You won’t have the opportunity to get other quotes to make sure the price you have been given is competitive or in line with average pricing.

  • A doorstep tradesman or roofer is practically untraceable once the work has been completed. If you then discover that the work is of poor quality or unnecessary you have no way of trying to track that person down.

  • Rogue roofers tend to target vulnerable people, such as the elderly. They can be convincing and intimidating, which can scare people into believing that work needs to be done immediately.

Steps you can Take to Avoid a Rogue Trader

If you have an elderly or vulnerable relative, friend or neighbour who lives alone, it is a good idea to check with them if anyone has tried to talk them into any work on their property. You can report a scam to Action Fraud by visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk  or by calling 0300 123 2040.

In the first instance it is always advisable to check any trader’s contact details before you commit. You can do an online search to see if you can find any feedback from previous customers.

Always seek quotes from more than one roofing company.

And always get everything in writing.
